Moth Food

Still swatching reversible fabrics. Not in love with any yet. This morning I decided to see if I could do something about a nasty sweater problem that Bill's been nagging me about. His J.Crew fair isle pullover, purchased about 10 years ago, has had a little hole in the tummy area for a long time. In fact, I'm pretty sure that the hole's been there since we lived in Washington, DC--four and a half years ago. Being Bill, he's been content to wear it with the little hole and because the fair isle pattern sort of camouflaged the hole, he's gotten away with it. But suddenly the hole isn't so little any more and this morning I discovered a second one. No need to lecture about why this happened. The sweater has spent most of its life in the bottom drawer of Bill's antique pine bureau and I won't speculate on how many times (or not) it's been washed. In its unwashed state in the dark, what else should we have expected to happen? The larger hole now looks like this:

Really, I'm not at all sure I can solve this. It's too large to fill in with some sort of duplicate stitch and if I attempt to darn it, Bill will end up with a weird woven-looking patch smack in the middle of his front. It's not like the moths were discreet about where they chose to have their meal. Why not the underarms? Help. Any ideas?
